I believe that each student who enters my classroom has unique skills that need to be cultivated and cared for in ways that specifically meet each individual’s needs. My class is intended to be a safe space for all students to confidently express who they are and share their individual talents for the betterment of the group. It is because of this belief that my teaching philosophy is a student-centered approach. With the students at the heart of my lessons, my goal is to guide them to develop competencies and skills that prepare them to confidently enter the next phase of their lives, whether that would be higher education or entering the workforce.
My lesson style is often collaborative, as I believe that the best learning happens when we are exposed to different cultures and opinions. This style of learning, if implemented correctly, will allow individual students to refine their weaker areas by learning from others, while also being able to exhibit their strengths for others to learn from. The beauty of teaching English is that all the problems that have existed in the past are still relevant to today, which allows students to explore current events while evaluating them in regard to the context of the assigned reading in class. This not only illuminates the relevancy of the reading in a modern-day context but also makes students better aware of what is going on in society today.
Alongside the social and collaborative skills, another skill that I want my students to acquire that will benefit them beyond the classroom is a technological literacy. We have so much knowledge in the palms of our hands, and it is important for students to learn how to use that in an ethical and professional way, which will strengthen their knowledge as individuals as well prepare them to be strong, productive members in society.
My hopes in choosing this student-centered view of teaching, paired with the technological tools is to provide a space where students can fine-tune a variety of skills which will lead them to college and career readiness. Through my enthusiasm of literature and a better future, I will take on the role of mentor for my students in exploring these important topics both within and without the classroom walls. In researching and collaborative learning, students will improve a wide skillset, including critical thinking, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, problem solving, advocacy, and the importance of being able to work as a member of a team.
